Motorcycle Accidents -- Don’t Be Fooled By The Numbers
Perhaps not surprisingly, California boasts the highest number of motorcycle riders in the entire United States. Its warm climate, beautiful scenery, and modern highway system, makes Southern California a pristine location for all bike enthusiasts to ride in.
Motorcycling realities
With the joy of bike riding though, comes the reality of danger and harm. For the third year in a row, the total number of motorcycle accidents involving fatalities has risen nationwide, with more than 5000 people losing their lives while bike riding, and California has the second highest number of motorcycle accidents and accidents involving fatalities. A recent motorcycle study found that motorcycle riders are 31% more likely to be involved in a serious or life ending accident while riding their bike. Motor bike enthusiasts should be aware that the risk of harm exists and precautions need to be taken to avoid getting into a serious or deadly accident.
Avoiding motorcycle accidents
Motorcycle riders should use the following tips to try and avoid getting into an accident which may seriously injure or threaten their life.
First, wear proper motorcycle 'gear'. This includes clothing that is tight that will not come loose and get stuck in the wheel or engine. Wear colors that are bright and will make you visible to others on the road. Most importantly, always wear a helmet. California Vehicle Code Section 27803 requires all motorcycle drivers and passengers to wear a helmet when riding on a motorcycle. Studies have continuously shown that a rider who does not wear a helmet has a much higher risk of serious brain injury and death when a head on collision occurs. The risks are dramatically reduced when a helmet is worn.
Next, be vigilant on the road and take all necessary precautions. Avoid lane splitting at high speeds. Stay out of automobiles blind spots so car drivers will be able to see you before changing lanes. Look out for potholes and traffic hazards which affect the balance of the bike and increase the likelihood that a biker might fall off. Avoid drinking alcohol while riding. Do not use a cell phone while riding or use any device to take your attention away from the road. Most importantly always be attentive of other drivers on the road, pay attention to your surrounding, and anticipate a car performing a lane change as to avoid getting hit.
Third, maintain your motorcycle at peak performance. Keep your tires at the recommended air pressure, and make sure your motorcycle engine has been checked for any issues. Any motorcycle issues with tires, acceleration braking or deceleration could affect your balance and throw you off your bike.
