LA Girl Walks Miles to Get Help After Wreck Kills Father
A young nine-year old girl walked over a mile and a half to get help after her and her father experienced a rollover crash in the high desert of northern Los Angeles County. Her father was driving an SUV late Saturday night, when the vehicle flipped off an embankment. The girl smelled the gasoline, so she turned off the engine and crawled out of the wreckage to find help for her father, who was unconscious. She first went to a nearby home, but after finding nobody there, she kept walking to a train station in Acton. There, she was able to get the attention of a passerby who helped her.
A helicopter airlifted her to the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, where she was treated for minor injuries. The spokeswoman for Children's Hospital said that her condition was good, but that she could not release more information because a guardian had not given their permission. Unfortunately, the girl's father was found dead at the scene. The girl's sister noted that their father was quite close to her injured sister and she was deeply saddened at his passing.
Police officers commended the girl's bravery, noting that the terrain was very steep and covered with brush. It was also quite cold out, dipping into the 40s. The girl kept walking through this, even amidst coyotes howling. Police are also investigating whether or not alcohol was involved, as the pair was coming from a friend's house, where there was supposedly drinking going on. Toxicology tests are still being done on the father's body.
