7-Year-Old Girl Dies at Santa Fe Springs Auto Show
On Monday, September 23, 2013, KTLA 5 reported that a seven-year-old girl died in an apparent freak accident at a Santa Fe Springs auto show on Sunday evening.
According to KTLA 5, the incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. inside a warehouse located in the 10200 block of Freeman Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The victim was reportedly struck by either a vehicle or by pallets of bottled water that were thrown over by the car, according to conflicting reports about the incident. The victim's cousin said that they're getting multiple stories, so that's another issue. The cousin said that she heard it was water that fell; she heard that the little girl was hit by a car, but nobody is telling the family anything.
According to witnesses the purpose of the event was to showcase lowrider cars with custom hydraulics, which enable the vehicle to jump several feet and often above the audience's heads.
The September 22 "hop" event was posted on the lowriders forum and advertised at CBM Hydro Parts. On Facebook, a page titled "Lowrider Boulevard" said that donations for the girl's family were being accepted at an Inglewood address, which is where Low Life Hydraulics is located.
A police spokesman said that an investigation was under way and declined to comment about the incident; however, the Los Angeles Police Department, which patrols Santa Fe Springs under a contract, did issue a statement on Monday morning where it called the incident a "traffic accident." The statement read, "A vehicle upon exiting the building lost control and struck a 7-year-old girl, killing her instantly."
Officials from the coroner's office removed the girl's body from the scene early Monday. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and no charges were pending according to authorities.
